Body Paint

Many cultures in the world decorate the human body as a part of festive and ceremonial activities and the torso often becomes the main canvas for colourful and varied patterns and designs. These designs are on display and they speak strongly of our connection to values and beliefs through colour and design. When we talk about pots we employ the same terms used to talk about the human body, thereby strengthening our connection with the object. For this exhibition I wanted to make some pieces that held those connections while maintaining the view of a simple pot. They are companionable vessels referencing the body and inviting the viewer to see the pot as the painted body on display in celebration and life. – CECILY WILLIS 2020
