Shadow and Light

Inspired by the technique of raku, the exhibition Shadow and Light by Cecily Willis, explores the myriad of results possible when utilising the raku reduction process. The 25 pieces featured in the exhibition are a testimony to resilience, determination and creative excellence. The vessels, mercurial and mysterious, tease the viewer with visual code to trigger the imagination. Figures and scenes blend and morph seamlessly as they dance over the surface of each vessel.
The process to create each piece begins with the ‘throwing’ of raku or stoneware clay onto a wheel. Some of the works were brushed with a layer of terra sigillata, while all works were bisque fired and covered in organic material. They were then sealed in a handmade clay saggar and fired for a second time. While glowing hot they were transferred into a reduction bin containing combustible materials. During this raku reduction process, smoke from the burning material impregnates the clay surface resulting in a range of 'Shadow and Light' impressions.

Cecily is a one of the leading ceramicists in the Northern Territory and this exhibition showcases her aesthetic and technical artistic dominance.

The exhibition runs from November 11 - December 3
