Seated in the far reaches of the Kimberley, Wiramanu (Balgo) is flanked by the Great Western and Tanami Deserts. It is the ceremonial hub for several Indigenous clans and is a site for the Luurnpa Tjukurrpa (Kingfisher Dreaming). It is also home to Warlayirti Artists, one of Australia's leading Indigenous art centres. Established in 1987 Warlayirti Artists quickly became known for its bold and innovative use of colour. Eight different language groups come together to use acrylic on canvas, printmaking and other mediums to tell their cultural stories. Practicing art has become an integral part of Wiramanu life. It allows artists to meet and discuss activities within the communities. It also strengthens ancient narratives and is a vehicle for intergenerational learning.
